How Do You Plan Your Website?
It’s not a trick question, it is intended to provoke thought. There’s a good reason why I ask this question. After eleven years of building online businesses in harmony with other business owners this is the most important aspect of your online success. The concept I’m about to show you will change your life. Although I use it for figuring out how to build any web site I also use it to organize my thoughts.
Mind Mapping Your Website
Step 1- Create Homepage
Create a central topic or main theme for your website. You can do this process manually or use software to help you. In this example I am showing you, industry leading software is used. The reason I use this software is because it is the native program that controls the output to PDF format, PowerPoint, HTML, Microsoft Word, Outlook, or bitmap.It can also be shared with others at anytime during development.
So the main topic of this website is “WordPress websites”. That will be the main theme of this entire web site.
Step 2- Create Categories And Subcategories
After doing your own research using keywords tools such as the free Google Adwords keyword suggestion tool it’s time to create categories.
After doing some research on Twitter, blogs and a few forums I have learned what topics would be most interesting to my market. My website structure will be as follows…
- Home page –WordPress web sites
- First category – WordPress optimization
- Second category – WordPress features
- Third category – how to setup
- Fourth category – WordPress examples
- Fifth category – WordPress content management
The five legged spider you see above in the screen capture is the backbone of your website. In my next brief tutorial I’m going to show you how we will continue to use one software program to create your empire. Yes, that means we’re going to publish a website directly from this software as well as be able to export it in many other formats.

You will notice many relationship arrows in blue and funny looking icons embedded into each content page. Topic grouping into logical key word clusters (information architecture) is also a large advantage in creating a complete website this way. Theme relevance is a major ranking factor for any website.
