The question for newcomers to the world of CMS is which product best suits your business? The best open source CMS seems to be Drupal, Joomla, or WordPress. In the circle I hang with few people would argue WordPress rocks. Having used both platforms (Drupal and Joomla are very similar) for online magazines, blogs and business websites WordPress shines in all aspects –thanks to the tight knit community of users and developers. There are just way more themes, gizmos and gadgets. The technical capabilities of each client will change and that is the main reason why the CMS software should also be your top choice—scalability. To me, it is hard to imagine any CMS as well rounded as WordPress. Think about the countless templates and plugins that are installed in seconds! That’s just my opinion and there are many people that would argue with me. For my situation, WordPress rocks. In my day job I have to use both. Joomla also has core strengths that WordPress does not have.

Like any web property, one of the first questions to ask yourself is why do you want a blog? Your answer will directly affect the theme you choose to give your site the right look and feel> When your blog is installed changing themes is one click away. Before you go ahead and change themes there are considerations you must make.

  • Have you modified your current theme? E.g. Adsense or custom coding to sidebar, header or footer.
  • Have you used any custom plugins to modify colors?
  • Do you understand the components of a WordPress theme?

Your WordPress theme files can be edited any way you want. These are the files that come with your standard WordPress Theme;

  • 404 Template = 404.php- Displays when a page cannot be found
  • Archive Template = archive.php- Displays archive posts
  • Archive Index Page = archives.php- Shows an index of all archives
  • Comments Template = comments.php- where comments are made on your Blog
  • Footer Template = footer.php- Displays footer links and the creator of the theme
  • Header Template = header.php- Shows at the top of every web page
  • Links = links.php- contains links
  • Main Template = index.php- provides framework for the entire blog
  • Page Template = page.php Provides framework for WordPress pages
  • Popup Comments Template = comments-popup.php pop up window for commenting
  • Post Template = single.php- Posts template
  • Search Form = searchform.php- Allows visitors to search your blog
  • Search Template = search.php- Allows you to create a search page
  • Sidebar Template = sidebar.php- controls the information being displayed in your sidebar
  • Stylesheet = style.css- delivers the style to the blog
