Expensive & Time Intensive Set Up

You'll spend more time planning your blog than building it!

Blog

The physical set up of a WordPress blog is not the time consumer. Deciding on your main topic and categories can be where time is spent. I recommend doing some research on your topic and categories first. You may learn there are better ways to package your content then your original thoughts. A WordPress blog is installed, configured, plugin loaded, and categorized in less than a day.

Website

There is a sequence that is usually followed to create a website:

- Market & Keyword Research

- Traffic Strategy

- Content Writing

- Design & Build – Deploy Site

Depending on the size of your site prices can range from $500 and UP. I personally have been involved in web design projects that exceeded $100K. A few years ago you wouldn’t have dreamed about building the backbone of your site with blog software. Today we have other factors influencing that decision such as social networking, advanced blog software, and the reason you want a website.

Easily Create Content from Anywhere

You can even post from your IPhone

Blog

With a webblog you can publish your content from your mom’s house, in Korea, your business or any location you are at. You can even use an IPhone to write posts, upload photos, edit pages, and manage comments.

Website

A website requires access to the source files. With each addition and modification you should connect with 2 servers:

  1. Your local system the source files are maintained on.
  2. Your web server where all your public files are hosted for visitors to access.

Some websites have CMS (content management systems). In this case you can publish your content easily from any location that has connectivity. CMS usually comes at a price yet this is exactly what WordPress is, totally free!

The user should be at the front of the line here. Similar to your storefront your entrance page should deliver a message within 5 seconds. Why do you want people to come to your blog? In my fictitious case above my company is a manufacturer of specialty fruit juices and we sell through wholesalers. The blog will be frequented by consumers and wholesalers. Based on my business model, which includes branding and product sales, I am going to create my architecture. I want to show both audiences the basics to our specialty juices. Our R&D department is constantly experimenting with our fine juices and our company sponsor’s many sporting events. Our juices are often endorsed by sport celebrities, on our blog we want to share that king of information. We also want an area to get feedback form wholesalers and consumers to help improve or beverage.

Genetics of Keywords

You can see other topics connected to “fruit juice”. Take a look at what phrases pertain to your business. They are all phrases that are tied to traffic and semantically connected. The idea here is make your blog granular (focused) on a topic and all subtopics (categories) should have a close relationship with the parent topic. Following this logic when you are setting up your blog can make or break your ability to rank.

Introduction to WordPress Websites

As soon as you say the words build a website, images cross your mind. Depending on who you are these images include painful, brain bending thoughts around the design and full deployment of your new site. Don’t feel bad, it happens to the best of us. There are so many ways to skin a cat.

If you have browsed a bit on the GALearning site, you may have noticed that many of my views are data driven and simple.
