Establishing Campaign Goals

This is a vision of what is to come with the Google Analytics print tracking recipe we’ll show you.
We have conclusively tested this effective method of tracking your direct mail. Additionally we used a call tracked phone number to measure phone responses. We sent out a total of 4 million printed mail pieces over 30 days. Unfortunately I cannot reveal our client so I have made a couple fictious print examples. The phone numbers and domain names are made up for the purpose of illustrating how this campaign worked. It was one of the coolest campaigns to analyze because there were unintended (unpredictable) outcomes.

A Few Good Uses for Google Analytics Filters
Prevent GATC Code Theft
Your tracking code is visible to anyone on the internet. All they need to do is “view the source” of your webpages that have the GATC (Google Analytics Tracking Code) installed and paste it into another webpage. Now your data is skewed! Is there anything you can do to prevent this form happening? YES!

This simple filter serves to instruct Google Analytics to only record site visits to your website.
- Add new Filter for Profile
- Name your filter “Traffic to Site”
- Choose Custom drop down
- Choose “Include”
- Choose Hostname in filter field
- Enter ^yourdomainname\.com$ in filter pattern

Direct Mail Goal Options to Track with Google Analytics
In Store Visits

Tracking store visits can be done with redemption coupons that are downloaded from your website. After coupons are downloaded they are printed with a bar code to redeem at participating stores.
You can also add coupons to your website and track how many times they were accessed by using a modified Google Analytics script for tracking downloads and form submissions.

Creating a Conversion Funnel for Visits from Print Mailings
In this article I am using 2 fictitious domains for the purpose of this post.
- Vanity URL: www.hbp.com
- Destination URL: www. hotbutteredpopcorn.com
A Call to Action is all it Takes
If you opt in on a landing page (you should), you will want to co-ordinate the look and style with the mail piece. Make your landing page a “Visitor to Action” Design. Here are the steps to take when you want to measure the effectiveness of print mailings using Google Analytics.
Step 1- Create Vanity URL

A vanity URL is inexpensive and easy to set up. It will serve the purpose of tracking your print mailings from a unique domain.
Step 2- The Coupon Mailer

Take note of the URL I am promoting, www.hbp.com. That means that the visitor is redirected to HotButteredPopcorn.com and counted as a visitor in Google Analytics. If you have the code fully integrated on HotButteredPopcorn.com then you will be able to see what your visitors from your mail campaign are doing. You got that? It’s the key to this whole tracking concept.
