Create Unseen Effects With Embossing

The outcome of the embossed effect is unique and elegant. It can be used to add extra graphic pizzazz to your stationery, reports, or booklets. But it is not always used for ornamental purposes. The engraved effects of embossing also have a very practical use for the vision impaired. Braille embossers provide a means for blind people to read. They do this by using their fingers where they feel the surface to read it. For blind and sighted people this unique form of embossed paper treatment has been practiced for centuries. Let’s examine the a few types of embossing you can experiment with.

Dry Embossing

Here you use a stylus combined with a tracing technique to form a pattern on paper. The pattern can be raised or depressed depending on which side of the paper is up.

The Basics of Heat Embossing

This embossing technique is commonly used in scrapbook building. To perform heat embossing you will need the following items:

* These Items can be found at your local arts and Craft Supply stores
* Stamp stamping for imagery or alpha characters
* A Heat gun
* Embossing Powder
* Embossing ink pad

Embossed Printing General

Embossing is most often practiced for decorative purposes. Its affects are timeless, elegant, memorable, and lasting. It is often produced on larger solid areas and is known for its subtle broad features. Embossing forces (stresses) a material to create raised or depressed bumps. With embossed printing it is a process where areas of paper are patterned by forcing paper fibers to move from pressure treatments. It is inherently difficult process when the embossed impression contains fine line detail.

Embossed printing will add elegance to fine patterns you want to tastefully integrate into your corporate image. By making an image raised or depressed you are adding an extra dimensions to your imagery. The effect will change the nature of the material you present to your viewers. By giving it a quaint look your image is enhanced by a blank impression onto paper. It can include print imagery or blank. An image without ink is known as blind embossing. A blank impression onto paper is made used as a unique graphic affect of a reading instrument for blind people (Braille).

You can get into embossing effects for your business sooner than you think; all you need is a professional company that has the desire to stand out from the crowd. With clever planning and a secure business budget the elegant look of embossing will give you enhanced imagery. Your local arts and craft store will provide you with all the tools you need to create your own cool embossing effects. It is a good place to start if you’re looking for your own unique prototypes.

How Does Raised Printing Work?

You can print raised lettering on a card, stationery, handouts or any printed item where you feel a second look is in order. Raised printing is also known as thermography. This applies especially to raised print business cards, after-all your business card can be a very busy printed item. Arguably it is one of the most traveled marketing instruments in your arsenal.

Step One Printing

This process is the same as traditional commercial printing in the beginning phase. The sheet of paper travels thorough a printing press and is printed with an image. The image comes from a plate that is developed similarly to photography. The surface of the plate is flat and each time it rotates 360 degrees it obtains a fresh supply of ink water. The ink adheres to the developed areas of the plate and the water keeps the non developed areas clean.

So the order it happens is like this; Plate Cylinder > blanket > paper.

Step Two Vacuum Pick-up Pad to Powder Unit

A newer feature with today’s raised printing systems it trackless picks up heads. This means that nothing touches the freshly printed sheet. It virtually eliminates ink and powder tracking on the printed piece. Below we can see the sheets of paper leaving the printing press and moving into the first steps of thermography, powdering.

The powder unit holds the powder that is sprinkled on the wet ink.

Frosting of powder

As the sheet of paper travels through the powder unit is receives a frosting of powder. This fine powder sticks to the wet ink on the paper.

Step 3- The Heat Tunnel

Once the paper exits the powder unit, it moves into the heat tunnel. The heat tunnel is inferred light that causes a reaction between the powder and ink, causing these areas to swell (raise)

Step 4- The Delivery

Finally the sheet is ejected from the heat tunnel and safely lands in the delivery tray.

At the end of this process you will end up with a crisply printed raising printed result. There are limits with raised printing because of the way it is done. For example fine lines or fine line tints are often missed or distorted. When the powder and ink are baked is when most of the distortion takes place. Although you can attempt to print tints (screen @ 133 LPI or better) the result will be a somewhat clogged looking appearance. The same way fine lines (.2 px. or less) will not print as intended. It is sometimes recommended to print in both flat and raised inks together so that all design elements are produced to give the desired result.

Are There Other Kinds of Raised Lettering?

Raised printing on most products turns out quite nicely. The machines used for raised printing have come along way since the 70′s but the production process is the same as it has always been. Raised printing printers can print raised lettering on your business stationery with stunning results.
Raised Lettering on Coins

Raised lettering is also found on coins where it is produced with segmented collars that form the raised image. This happens during the minting process, where the segmented collars eject the coins after production these impressions in coins will last for centuries. As a matter of fact the oldest coin known to man is over 2700 years old. It can be seen if the Department of Coins and Medals at the British museum.

Conclusion

So, now you have it. You’ve been given my quick tutorial on how raised printing works; the next step is your choice. Take this information and make it work for you. It’s easier to move forward without knowledge, but in the end it may turn around and bite you. Knowledge is always power when it is used appropriately.

One of the most common uses for embossed printing in printmaking is logos. When you emboss logos you are raising areas of a paper above the level of the paper’s natural state. During the actual production of embossed printing several tons of pressure is used. The embossing die and the embossed paper become united in a printing press and the impression of the brass or magnesium plate is left on the surface of the paper.

Often (not always) colour inks, spot color printing and varnishing are combined. When inks are not included in embossed printing it is known as blind embossed. This form of embossed engraving is also used to produce Brail, which is how the vision impaired people read. When you get your printing Blind embossed in business it is recognized as luxurious and extravagant.

To begin the embossed print process you need a concept. Once you have your graphic elements visualized they need to be illustrated in line art form. Next you will need to make a die for embossing. The least expensive way to produce the embossing die is to use magnesium based dies. They can be created photo-mechanically or digitally. This method of embossing paper may not be what you are looking for. Perhaps you want multi levels to your embossing die. In this case you need to define the depth of layers. A good example of embossed printing can be found here. This will help you understand what is involved in making a plate by using layers.

Making the communication method from an embossed printing buyer to the vendor of choice clarity. Logos should be delivered clearly and concisely if perfection is the goal. Embossed Printing involves changing the shape of embossed paper to create multi-levels of fine imagery with paper. To transfer your desired effect on paper precisely, a simplification and outlines of the effect are required. Executed properly a beautiful three dimensional design on elegant paper will be sure to dazzle the most cynical design critics.

This old school, fine line, elegant method of printmaking is not cheap. The embossing die that is needed can also have tremendous impact on the price of embossed printing. A mag (magnesium) die, Brass Cup die, Brass Sculptured die are all priced much differently. I have listed them in order of production costs, the least expensive being a magnesium die. The basic rule of thumb is, this style of print- making is double the price of conventional printing using inks, at least.

The process of embossing is a lot like foil stamping, in fact the embossing machines that perform custom embossing also produce foil stamping. The added part to the process is the transfer of foil, which is applied from a roll that feeds into the embossing press as required. It can also bee combined with embossing ink, spot colors, and CMYK colors.

If you want to take a look at various simulations of embossing effects it can be achieved through graphics software such as Adobe Photo Shop. By using modern day technology you can virtually see your finished product before any expensive tooling takes place. This is a convenience that was not available when I began to learn this fine print making art. One fact remains about embossed printing projects is it converts ordinary in to the extraordinary.

This coating will be similar to varnish on both coated and uncoated papers but provides better protection over time. It is a low-pollution coating made under strict environmental-protective standards. It is a totally a water based coating which is applied in the same manner as ink on press. The coating can have an impact on its performance over time by withstanding wear and tear, scuffing and resistance to water. It can be applied in glossy, Matte or Satin finish to diffuse refection for better readability. When this protective coating is used it will typically cover the entire press sheet, but can also be set up to print the same as spot varnish (A custom graphic shape such as a logo)

Vector Art With your Favorite DTP program

I enjoy making my own professional artwork because it’s simple to create frames, boxes, or other page elements and place them where you want them within your project. Many of these programs have on board templates that are installed with the application that are great for ideas. Using my desktop program I always come up with original art that can be sent to anyone in the reproduction business to open and include in any project it is required. I stay away from the small, mickey mouse programs because they are stand alone. This means that they are rarely supported by others and can leave you in a quandary when you are trying to get professional support. BY using the reputable programs you get the best reproduction in color in RGB or CMYK language. We are often asked to create the logo from scratch which will ultimately be sent to print and the web for display. To insure the highest degree of accuracy use programs like Illustrator, Quark or Photoshop. For our needs we like illustrator. It is our #1choice for laying out and creating most any creative item called for in any format including SWF. Illustrator is used in our operation when you want to get Images in color for your designs and full color combination templates.

Facts on Four-Color Process Printing

Four-colour print works through light absorption and reflection. Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-Black is are the 4 primary colors that are used on the printing press. These colors are also available in many color laser printers today which allow you to get a rough idea of what your project may look like in its finished printed format. Four colour process colors can be determined with a color wheel that you learned helpful tips and advice with in school to design aesthetically. It is really a case of dialing the right color in then you’ll see how it’s made (Percentages of each color)

Four-color printing means Cyan Magenta Yellow Black (Kilo) as required for the printing process and CMYK digital printing machines.

The Effect of Varnish on Your Full color Printing

<fieldset>
<legend>How we see Varnish</legend>

What is usually most noticeable about a varnished piece is the general crispness of its illustrations, typography and the depth and saturation of its colors. Furthermore, certain images tend to stand out, by comparison, while others recede. This latter effect is produced by variable reflectivity, which can be used for separating images, attracting attention, and providing surprising effects in design.

The appearance of smoothness on paper is the result of using GLOSS VARNISH in the area it overprints and is also used to create an enhanced look to printed full color photographs. A very small amount of light diffusion is visible to the human eye, therefore we perceive this image as appearing sharper than the unvarnished areas.

The appearance of slight roughness and semi translucent with a Velvety feeling texture is the result of using DULL VARNISH. Have you ever been reading colorful glossy brochure and at one point of light reflection been unable to see what you were looking at? Dull varnish scatters and diffuses the light reflection therefore eliminating glare. Thus dull-varnished images have a softer look than those either printed on plain paper or overprinted with gloss varnish.

Use different types of varnishes to create a certain uniqueness to each and every printed item you produce. attention getting, calming and diffusing. You can truly achieve new heights in design. Play one off against the other, use different paper surfaces, send it through twice for added effect.

Try using varnish on your next promotional brochure, and gauge the difference with this enhancement!</fieldset>

This diagram represents the surface of a coated paper over print with a uniform film of ink. Such a paper ink combination produces a surface that is relatively smooth.
Dull Varnish

When dull varnish overprints paper and ink, it produces a velvet-like effect. This is because dull varnish contains platelets that rise to the surface as it sets and dries. The final arrangement of these platelets is so irregular that light rays striking them are reflected in many different directions, diffusing the light. The printed surface, therefore, appears dull.

Healing Power of Color

Color is used in many forms to heal and aid the sick, diseased and the distressed. color has been used in healing from ancient times, as far back as Atlantis. The sun’s rays have been known to have magical healing qualities and these rays passed through a spectrum, will give you colors that have very good healing qualities for certain illnesses and injuries.

Color is used in ways such as visualizing certain colored rays in treatment of a patient who is known to have a certain illness, etc. It can be used in the form of passing sunlight through panes of colored glass or filters and by using colored lamps. Another method used to obtain the color for therapy is by putting water in colored, clear containers out in the sun and allowing the sun’s rays to pass through the colored glass into the water, then the water is sipped. Leave the containers out in the sun for 2 hours only and bring them in before midday.

Some healers like to use the visualized colored rays only but some like to help keep the color energies around the patient also by keeping the color in the food they eat, the clothes they wear and the color of their surroundings.

color healing should only be done by people who are expert in knowing what color or what mixture of colors is needed for a certain patient with a certain illness. Each color and color combination has its own vibration and to make it compatible with the patient vibration, an expert assessment must be made. As well as being very distinctive visually, each color has its own feeling and taste. So while one color would be a good treatment for one patient it may cause problems for another. Over exposure to certain colors may result in side effects, so color therapy must be used wisely and only by those who have the knowledge to use it.

Color and mood psychology relationships often set the stage for setting moods in graphic objects, scenery, pictures, rooms, graphic designs, children’s playrooms and day to day activities. When the traffic light turn amber what do you do? It is an ongoing field of the study in learning how using certain colors can influence the outcome. From advertising to interior decorating colors are on the top of the list. Why is that? If color can impact a human reaction then the sky is the limit. Advertiser’s have known of this marketing design element for centuries. Sir Isaac Newton learned that when he passed pure white light through a prism all visible colors in the spectrum were visible to the human eye.

Perceptions of color as they relate to mind and human behavior is an eternal study. Scientists are finding new things out about colors every day. In chemical and engineering news chemists at Ben Gurion University, Beersheva, Israel have found a way to view cell membranes they could not see before.

“[Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., 44, 1092 (2005)]. When the cell membrane is disturbed, the polymer undergoes a conformational change, which in turn brings about a color change. The polymer turns from blue to red and starts to fluoresce.”

Graphic designers use colour with their eyes to communicate the look and feel of a project. Advanced graphic design students that have studied its association with design apply the key concepts into amazing designs. They will go on to perform analysis, experiment with combinations and measure emotional response. Well balanced colors correspond to the theme of each design. If you were selling water coolers a nice choice would be light blue and a cool grey. Science-minded people working in design have a magic way of co-ordinating colors.

To best describe the mood of your room, design or car color it is helpful to know what colors mean. That is the purpose of this webpage, to help you understand how using colors will effect the people that see them. It is everywhere and reaches out to you everyday in countless ways.

Artists create each painting using it to express the mood and feel.

Technical instructions are often coded using colors

Children respond to certain colours in a more favorable way.

Powerful Colors To Use

Roaring Red

It builds muscular tension and therefore is not a top choice for prisons, insane asylums, health care facilities or old folks homes. if you want quick attention to something red and white or yellow and red are smart choices. It also has a welcoming quality that makes it a popular choice for restaurants because it also stimulates the appetite.

What about a redneck? What’s up with that? A Redneck is a person that grew up farming. There are many Redneck Jokes associated with these people.

If you are looking to use it more on the feminine side that red mixed with white makes pink. In RGB color language (what you see on a monitor) Red, green and blue mix to form white.

Relaxing and Trustworthy Blue

You can tell people that have a strong believe in color therapy by their area rugs. if they are blue it’s a good sign they are color therapy believers. Color and light in healing beliefs have been followed since medieval times. The color blue is special because it projects an image of power, credibility and professional. For this reason it is a very popular choice used in the business world.

Sleep Well Baby

Blue is also used for crib bedding regardless of the baby’s gender. It is a good choice to slow down your pulse rate. Color researchers have found that this color can lower the body’s temperature putting you into a relaxed sleep state.

Rare in Nature

Black, Blue, purple and green food don’t sound too appetizing to me. It is thought when humans originally began to search for food they knew to avoid toxic or spoiled objects. This was determined by site and smell.
